How to Integrate Paper Prototypes into your Wireframing Tool

We’ve all read about the benefits of sketching concepts out with others. Sometimes sketching does bring the best inspiration and can be faster when you are coming up with ideas. At other times, an idea might come to you when you only have pen and paper at hand. This is all fine, but when it comes to the next step, how can you transfer this into a digital format? You can use a wireframing tool, but will that mean starting again from scratch? What is the most time-efficient method for your workflow?

One option is to take photos of your paper prototypes and upload these to your wireframe tool. Then overlay sections of the UI with clickable sections. In some cases this is sufficient for a product demo. For me, working with a wireframing tool has meant that I can incorporate interactions easily, even when I am just in my planning mode. I have to admit that I can be a bit of a perfectionist and I know I will spend hours tweaking my code at a time when it doesn’t count unless I use a drag and drop editor. I also like to be able to test my interactions early on, even if they are simple interactions, such as page linking. I find that by getting feedback from users and coworkers early on in my workflow, I can optimize and improve my designs as I go. Now when I create paper prototypes, I am always ready for the next step of the process.
